Prenatal Infection Prevention Month: Protecting You & Your Baby Naturally

Writer: Keshia LockettKeshia Lockett

February is Prenatal Infection Prevention Month, a time dedicated to raising awareness about the importance of preventing infections during pregnancy. Protecting both maternal and infant health is essential, as certain infections can lead to complications such as preterm birth, low birth weight, birth defects, and developmental delays. The good news is that many prenatal infections are preventable with the right education, care, and proactive health measures.

At Empowered Doula Training, we believe that education is the first step in reducing risks for pregnant individuals and their babies. As doulas, we play a vital role in supporting, educating, and empowering families during pregnancy and birth. In this blog, we’ll discuss common prenatal infections, how they affect pregnancy, and how both parents and birth workers can take natural and holistic steps to prevent them.

Common Infections During Pregnancy & Holistic Prevention Strategies

1. Group B Strep (GBS)

GBS is a type of bacteria found in the intestines or vaginal area of some pregnant individuals. While it is harmless to most adults, it can be dangerous for newborns if transmitted during birth.

Holistic Prevention:

Probiotics & Fermented Foods: A healthy gut microbiome can help balance bacteria naturally. Foods like yogurt, kefir, sauerkraut, and kimchi support good bacteria.

Garlic & Antimicrobial Herbs: Garlic has natural antibacterial properties. Adding raw garlic, oregano oil, or echinacea to your diet may help balance vaginal flora.

Coconut Oil: Applying organic, raw coconut oil to the vaginal area may support a healthy balance of bacteria.

2. Cytomegalovirus (CMV)

CMV is a common virus that spreads through bodily fluids, including saliva and urine. While it often causes mild symptoms in adults, it can lead to hearing loss, vision problems, and developmental issues in newborns.

Holistic Prevention:

Boost Immunity Naturally: Eating foods rich in vitamin C, zinc, and elderberry can help strengthen the immune system.

Essential Oils: Diffusing antimicrobial essential oils like tea tree, eucalyptus, or lavender may help reduce viral exposure.

Herbal Teas: Drinking echinacea or astragalus tea supports the immune system’s natural defense.

3. Toxoplasmosis

This infection is caused by a parasite found in raw meat and cat feces. It can lead to miscarriage, stillbirth, or birth defects if transmitted during pregnancy.

Holistic Prevention:

Dietary Awareness: Choose organic, pasture-raised meats and cook them thoroughly. Washing fruits and vegetables with apple cider vinegar or baking soda can remove contaminants.

Safe Pet Care: Avoid cleaning cat litter boxes or wear gloves and wash hands immediately after handling pets.

Immune-Boosting Supplements: Consider spirulina, chlorella, and medicinal mushrooms to naturally strengthen immunity.

4. Listeria

Listeria is a bacteria found in unpasteurized dairy, deli meats, and raw seafood. Pregnant individuals are more susceptible to foodborne illnesses, which can cause miscarriage or preterm labor.

Holistic Prevention:

Eat Fresh & Local: Opt for fresh, organic, and minimally processed foods to avoid contamination.

Apple Cider Vinegar Rinse: Washing produce with diluted apple cider vinegar can help remove bacteria.

Support Gut Health: Drinking bone broth and consuming fermented foods can aid digestion and support the body’s ability to fight harmful bacteria.

5. Zika Virus & Other Mosquito-Borne Illnesses

Zika virus, spread by infected mosquitoes, can cause severe birth defects, including microcephaly. Pregnant individuals should take precautions, especially in areas where Zika is common.

Holistic Prevention:

Natural Bug Repellents: Use citronella, lemongrass, and neem essential oils to deter mosquitoes.

Wear Protective Clothing: Lightweight, long-sleeved clothing can reduce mosquito bites without the need for chemical sprays.

Herbal Support: Drinking nettle and red raspberry leaf tea can strengthen the immune system and support overall pregnancy health.

General Holistic Infection Prevention Tips for Pregnancy

Pregnant individuals can take additional natural steps to minimize the risk of infections and ensure a healthy pregnancy:

Eat a Whole-Food, Nutrient-Dense Diet – Focus on organic fruits, vegetables, healthy fats, and quality proteins to support immune function.

Stay Hydrated – Drinking plenty of filtered water with lemon can help flush toxins from the body.

Use Herbal Remedies – Herbs like ginger, echinacea, elderberry, and garlic have natural antimicrobial properties.

Manage Stress Naturally – High stress can weaken the immune system. Practices like meditation, yoga, and deep breathing can help.

Prioritize Rest & Movement – Getting adequate sleep and engaging in gentle exercise like walking or stretching can improve overall health.
